Sony are making a big thing about their Carl Zeiss lens systems, recognising that consumers are no longer just won over by megapixels, they want image quality and the quality components it takes to produce that. Although the lens systems used by Sony are designed by Carl Zeiss labs they are manufactured in Japan.

Taking the lens system situation on its own, us reviewers have for a long time begged manufacturers to fit decent quality lenses to digital cameras. Over a year ago we were reading comments by engineers saying that tiny lens systems focusing a scene down to such a small CCD area were reaching their limit. With the advent of greater and greater pixel counts without an associated increase in imager size the need for quality lenses is becoming more and more apparent (and obvious if you look at the increased visibility of chromatic aberrations on the latest batch of 3 megapixel digital cameras).

So here Sony enter the arena with the DSC-S70 battery, a more traditional design than their excellent but rather wild looking F505, it's not too big nor is it pocket sized, but with a nice big, bright F2.0 Carl Zeiss lens they're hoping it'll produce the image quality that educated consumers are expecting.

Building on the success of their earlier Cybershot digital camera series, the latest Sony DSC-S70 camera eschews the groovy swivel lens and ultra compact shape of its predecessors and goes for a more traditional appearance - but don't be fooled by its conservative looks, this puppy is packed with the latest features and innovations!

Image resolution has been bumped up to an impressive 3.3 megapixels, with the superb Carl Zeiss 3x f2~2.5 zoom lens (equivalent to 34-102mm on a 35mm camera) producing some of the sharpest pictures I've ever seen from a digital camera. laptop batterylaptop battery, Laptop battery

NP-FM50 Battery life has also been extended way past the competition with a mighty 120+ minutes per charge with a nifty 90 minutes recharge time using Sony's superb InfoLithium battery: compare that with NiMH batteries which usually conk out after an hour and take an age to recharge.

NP-FM50 Battery life can be conserved further by using the new optical viewfinder, while a handy LED display on the top plate provides a readout of exposure modes, memory stick and battery status.
